Max and Chiho’s house sits at the top of Diilerilaaq village.
His sledge is parked outside. His dogs are chained and settled nearby. Max is home, or hereabouts.
Inside Chiho moves about brightly decorated rooms: the hunter-and-serpent front room and music studio, the cosmic kitchen and map room, the whale-and-polar-bear-hide library. At the top of the seal-skin stairwell is the star-and-seagull room, once Rosalie’s room, now mine.
Around the kitchen table we drink a lot of tea. Under the ceiling’s circling animals we feast on orca stew, boiled seal, narwhal mattuq, polar bear steaks, broiled red fish, steamed mussels. Naturally, we look out the window to the fjord mountains icecap as we scan the wall of maps and plan our adventures.
